Torquil was born and raised in Edinburgh and trained at the Royal Academy of Music in piano, composition, conducting
and commercial music.

Even before the Academy he was writing, receiving first prize in an international composers' competition for his choral anthem To See A World which received its world premiere in Glasgow Cathedral in 1990. A song cycle, The Wanderer, was also premiered in the Queen's Hall, Edinburgh in 1989.

Since graduating, Torquil has worked steadily as a professional musician in various guises and he has always strived to encompass all genres and areas of performance.

As a music director in theatre, Torquil has been involved with many hit productions both in the West End and on Broadway - he was part of the original team to set up the worldwide smash Mamma Mia! and was music director with the show at the Prince Edward Theatre in London for 3 years. Other credits include 13 (Apollo Theatre), Blood Brothers (UK Tour), The Last Five Years (Theatre Royal, Haymarket and Duchess Theatre), Tick Tick... Boom! (Duchess Theatre), David Bedella, Live (Leicester Sq. Theatre), They’re Playing Our Song (Menier Chocolate Factory), Christmas in New York (Lyric Theatre), Bounce (Musical Supervisor, Roundhouse), It’ s A Bird, It’ s A Plane, It’ s Superman (York Theatre, New York). As Associate MD: Shrek (Theatre Royal, Drury Lane), Cats (UK Tour), Miss Saigon (Theatre Royal, Drury Lane), Baby (Reprise@UCLA, Los Angeles).

From 2004-2007 he lived and worked in Los Angeles as part of Synchronicity Music Inc. to expand his experience as a composer. During this time his music was heard on Nick & Jessica - The Newlyweds, The Osbournes and Battle for Ozzfest (all MTV); The Love Lounge (VH1); Before & Afternoon Movie (USA Network); Fox Sports Network and all 3 Fox College Sports stations. In 2005 he received a Golden Trailer nomination for best original music for a motion picture trailer for the worldwide campaign for Warner Bros' Ocean’ s Twelve. While with Synchronicity, Torquil worked with singers and songwriters including Matt Goss (string arranging), Romina Arena (orchestration) and Valentino DiLorenzo (orchestration/production). He also collaborated on arrangements with such esteemed masters of the art as Tom Scott and Jorge Calandrelli.

Torquil has scored 2 feature films: True Love (Antic Pictures) and What We Do (Skyrock Entertainment), along with numerous shorts and commercials.

During his time in America, Torquil worked on the NBC television show Grease, You're The One That I Want and performed with the winning couple on NBC's Access Hollywood. Also, as a vocal coach, he worked with Pierce Brosnan and Amanda Seyfried in preparation for their roles in the Mamma Mia! Movie.
